Annie's Ramblings - Amazing needlework and plenty of projects!

Hi there. I am sitting here in the classroom with the sun streaming in surrounded by some of the amazing work by members of the Ashburton Embroiderer’s Guild – what a treat!

27.7.23 1The exhibition continues from 10am- 4.00pm each day finishing with a “Stitch Gathering” all day this Saturday. Bring your stitching and join in, or just come along and admire the work in progress as well the completed projects on display.

27.7.23 2This week I thought I would show you my version of “Maisie’s Bag” from Birdhouse Designs...and before I hear you say it, the answer is “Of course you need another bag!” This one is comes as a pattern for the bag, scrap collector and pincushion ($24.00) or a kit ($59.90) and is a gorgeous combination of Liberty Tana Lawn, linen fabrics and small embroideries.

In case you missed it, we have two new stitchery Block of the Months running at the moment, but these are filling up fast! “Sending My Love” by Gail Pan is available in French General Blues and “Town and Around” by Petals and Patches features pieces houses and stitched village scenes. If you would rather choose you own fabrics, they are also available as pattern only.

Don’t forget our Cross Stitch night is on this Friday from 5-8 pm, come on down! Need a new project or want to learn to patchwork or make your own clothes? Talk to us about the other classes that we offer or have a look at our website.

Catherine McDonald’s Slow Stitching class at Annie’s on Saturday 9 September is not to be missed either!

When I was looking through my books I rediscovered this quiche recipe which I haven’t made for a while, and it is back on the menu at my house this week. It is delicious and a good one to make while pumpkin is plentiful.

Spiced Cashew and Pumpkin Quiche

Topping:

  • 30g butter
  • 2tsp oil
  • 1 clove crushed garlic
  • 1 tsp each of garam masala and curry powder
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • Pinch of cayenne
  • ½ raw cashew nuts, chopped
  • ½ tasty cheese
  • ½ cup finely grated parmesan

For the quiche:

  • 150 g kumara (cut into cubes and steamed until tender)
  • 30 g butter
  • ¼ tsp each garam masala and tumeric
  • 1 small leek
  • 1 ½ tsp flour
  • 1 ½ tsp vegetable stock powder
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 lightly beaten eggs
  • 2/3 c cooked mashed pumpkin (approx 200g)

Prepare the topping first by browning all the ingredients in a pan. Cool and then add the cheeses.

Slice and cook the leek until tender with the butter and spices for the base. Gradually stir in the milk, stock and flour and cook until it is thickened. Cool and then in the kumara, potato and eggs. Mix well and pour into a greased quiche dish and make for about 15 mins at 180C. Remove the dish from the oven and sprinkle over the topping and cook for a further 5 minutes or until golden and set.

Best wishes and happy stitching from the team at Annie’s CQS.
