Annies Newsletter - Japanese classes this weekend

Hi there. Another week rolls around and it is hard to believe that we are whistling through April......which reminds me to tell you that we will be closed for Anzac Day.

19.4.18 2This weekend we are hosting Jane McDonald (Australia) from Bebe Bold for three days of workshops focusing on Sashiko, Boro and Kogin techniques involved in Japanese hand stitching. If you are keen to join us there are still a couple of places in the Sashiko and Kogin classes with more information on the class page of the website. Please note that the venue has changed for the Sashiko and Kogin classes which are now being held at Annie’s, and the Boro class is at the Linton lounge of the Ashburton RSA.

We also have some beautiful new Japanese fabrics that have just arrived along with this stunning book from Susan Briscoe. I only have a limited number of these books, but if you can’t make it to the class and would like to place an order we can certainly do that. The Utimate Sashiko Sourcebook is highly recommended and is $52.00.

19.4.18 1Also looking forward to a great idea for Christmas presents (or something for yourself)..... Sue Spargo is putting out another calendar for 2019 which we are taking pre-orders for. These are stunning, and in the same format which Sue has produced in the past with large full colour pictures show casing her work and priced at $46.00. It is like have a piece of artwork on your wall that changes each month!

There are a few things to note on the calendar, or put in the “don’t forget” department.

  1. The Bernina Sale continues until May 13 (Mother’s Day). With 20% off all accessories as well.
  2. Registrations are still open for Quilt West in Greymouth. Check it out on line. Where I will be a merchant, as well as teaching the Tuffet class. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  3. Our Woolly Stitchers Day will be Saturday 28 April. Everyone is welcome. More details on class page - https://www.anniesquilts.co.nz/cms/classes.html

Now, on to the recipe.....this is a really good one for when there is nothing in the cupboard as a quick and easy lunch dish or Sunday night tea.

Potato Cheese Flan

  • 3 medium potatoes (grated)
  • 1 small carrot (grated)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 25 g butter
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ c milk
  • 2 tbsp sour cream
  • 1 clove of crushed garlic
  • 1 c grated cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat the oven to 180C. Grease and oven proof dish. Place the grated vegetables on a paper towel to absorb the excess moisture. In a small frying pan sauté the onion and garlic. Beat the egg and melted butter, milk and sour cream, salt and pepper. Add in the vegetables and spread the mixture in the prepared dish and bake for 25 mins. Remove from the oven and sprinkle the cheese over the top and bake for a further 10 minutes. Some chopped ham, or bacon is also a good addition to the dish as well as peppers and zucchinis when they are in abundance.

Serve in wedges with a green salad.

Happy stitching and stay warm.
